Redistricting
Every ten years, all states go through what is called "redistricting." Redistricting is when the state and local governments redraw the maps of their elected officials. All levels of government are affected - school boards, city councils, county supervisors, state legislators, and US House of Representatives.
One of the most important things about our government is that every person is equally represented. Because people move, every ten years our government uses the US Census to rebalance our elected officials' districts so they all represent about the same number of people. That way, no one elected official has more power than another in that same office.
In the last ten years, some districts lost population, while others gained. Redistricting changes the boundaries of our school board, city council, county supervisor, state representative, state senator, and US Representative districts to reflect those population changes.
Your district may have changed this year. While in 2012 you are still represented by your current elected officials, you will vote for the elected officials running in your new districts this November.
